Input method german-postfix

I like to use a US keyboard layout and still want to type characters from other languages like the german umlauts. My preferred way to do this in emacs is the input-method german-postfix.

The input "ae" becomes "ä". ae -> ä oe -> ö ue -> ü sz -> ß

Is there a possibility to mimic this with awesome emacs?
