Question: new Release

Open devnope opened this issue 4 months ago • 8 comments

Hello,

I am currently facing Problems with ripping with my trusty Asus Drive. I am not sure, what the issue is, a prior Issue appears to be inconclusive(https://github.com/whipper-team/whipper/issues/594)

However, whilst error-hunting, I again noticed, that there have been updates, but no releases. Why is that? would it be possible, to get a up-to-date release? I feel rather unmotivated, to regularly build the software myself, I'd also rather have fedora take care of dependency management, than doing it myself.

Is there a possibility, to push a release up the hill?

Yes, we should make a new release ASAP. I'm trying to free up a few hours to do it.

Anything we can do to help?

My plan is to set up a couple of drives tomorrow and see what is required to build on the newer versions of Python (if not already). I'll also upgrade the Dockerfile. If things work ok, we can do some RC, test it a bit, and then make a release?

I'd happily look into updating to the latest python version if you'd like and think that's a decent first issue? though I'm not sure what your testing methodology is and have only one drive to test with.

Couple of comments on Whipper - I used to use Morituri a lot and liked it.

  • Surprisingly, Compact Discs are trending again. You can see it everywhere. Sales are up and old CD players are flying from fleamarkets and online auctions.
  • This leads to surging interest in high quality CD-ripping software, which are mostly abandoned in early 2010's.
  • Whipper is one of the very few seeing at least some level of code maintenance or development. Fre:ac is another one.
  • The default packagin on Ubuntu 24.04 seems some what broken -- Whipped does not work straight out the box as snap or deb. I did not troubleshoot in to the issue (fre:ac works).

Time is right for a new release to revive the interest to the open source project. It would be great if someone capable could also check the packaging that they actually work out of the box.

Flatpak/Flathub would be a great distribution channel for this software and bring increased attention to Whipper.

@ljpp "Surprisingly, Compact Discs are trending again. You can see it everywhere. Sales are up and old CD players are flying from fleamarkets and online auctions.", it actually doesn't surprise me a bit. The quality of streaming services has degraded considerably (just look at netflix, disney+ or spotify) and most people aren't yet willing to start up piracy again.

In regards to the deb package, I did a little surface-level digging and found out that the issue most likely has to do with the deprecation of distutils, I went into a bit more detail here https://github.com/whipper-team/whipper/issues/663
