WHID stuck in reboot loop, unable to reflash or reset with esptool and arduino

I am quite certain my cactus keeps resetting because the script i have written to it runs periodically (even though it is only meant to run once) and the wifi access point also periodically disappears and reappears. I have tried to reset/ reflash on windows, osx and linux without success where it just says "relaying command to esp device" in arduino and "A fatal error occurred: Failed to connect to ESP8266" with the esptool. The issue is likely like i said due to the fact that it seems to be constantly resetting. I also cannot upload a new script to it because the time the AP is on is too short for me to connect and upload a new script (before it reboots)
