Mac spinning wheel of death on start

Open SamEdwardes opened this issue 7 months ago • 10 comments

What Operating System(s) are you seeing this problem on?

macOS

Which Wayland compositor or X11 Window manager(s) are you using?

n/a

WezTerm version

wezterm 20240203-110809-5046fc22

Did you try the latest nightly build to see if the issue is better (or worse!) than your current version?

No, and I'll explain why below

Describe the bug

Thank you for all the great work on WezTerm. I have been using it for about 12 months with no issue, but recently I have been experiencing a lot of crashes. Sometimes it will crash on start, sometimes it will crash hours into my session. By "crash", I mean the GUI becomes unresponsive, I see the Mac spinning wheel of death, and I have to force quit WezTerm to be able to use it again.

I apologize I am not giving you much to work off of here. I have not been able to find any logs or clues as to what the problem is. If you have any trouble shooting steps I will be happy to try and report back.

To Reproduce

wezterm --skip-config

Configuration

no config

Expected Behavior

No response

Logs

Launched from the command line. No logs.

Anything else?

No

Hi - just tried installing the latest version of wezterm both from brew, and downloaded the latest version from the official website. On opening, in both cases, the Mac spinning wheel of death appears... and "Application not responding" message appears in the dock menu.

You might be hitting #6833, try disabling Apple Intelligence 🤔

bew avatar May 30 '25 17:05 bew

Thank you I will try the suggestion. 24 hours on the daily and no crashes yet.

I have been running the daily for a few days now and no issue. I never figured out the root cause. I was using Apple intelligence and Raycast, so maybe related to that? Either way I will mark this as closed for now.

I was using Apple intelligence and Raycast

Are you still using those ?

bew avatar Jun 04 '25 08:06 bew

Yes I am. The only change I made was updating to the daily WezTerm.

SamEdwardes avatar Jun 04 '25 11:06 SamEdwardes

Interesting, there wasn't any change recently (between when you opened the issue and now) so it's weird, unless macos fixed something 🤔 Could you mention the version of Mac OS that you're on?

I spoke too soon. The spinning wheel of death returned this morning:

wezterm 20250524-112104-b11cd7ae
macOS 15.5 (24F74)

I have tried disabling Apple intelligence. I will report back if that makes a difference.

SamEdwardes avatar Jun 05 '25 17:06 SamEdwardes

Ok - yes, looks like it doesn't like Apple Intelligence.

dickiedyce avatar Jun 06 '25 13:06 dickiedyce

Yes I am. The only change I made was updating to the daily WezTerm.

This didn't work for me - disabling Apple Intelligence is a the best workaround so far.

Update: 14 days since I disabled Apple Intelligence and no Wez Term crashes yet.
