Morning! No rush on this because apparently no one has flagged this up since we switched to WC but I've noticed that we have a bunch of Genetics Books that have downloads restricted on via Goobi, which results in a player code of 32 in the METS. These restrictions were used a lot in the Universal Viewer but I'm not sure how much work went into translating them on WC. Anyway, when the item is viewed on WC , you can't see the image. You can deep zoom (sort of) and you can see the thumbs but otherwise the image is broken https://wellcomecollection.org/works/gnbybfyb/items?canvas=38 https://wellcome.slack.com/archives/CBT40CMKQ/p1691050149722109

Player code 32 is "Embed" - a permission that governed whether the UV would offer the embed UI (e.g., to embed on your own web page like a YouTube video). If the player code is only 32, it's effectively the same as 0 as far as the DLCS is concerned - you can embed the UV but you can't do anything else.

NB UV = Universal Viewer, a IIIF viewer used on the previous Wellcome Library site.

Info from Ashley: I think [a dev] needs to talk to the other team [Experience] about how we should deal with the restrictions we can put on an item that creates player code 32s, namely that we restrict download of high res images, restrict embedding, restrict PDF download etc. This stuff used to work fine on the Universal Viewer but it's not translating correctly on Wellcome Collection. We didn't notice it wasn't really working because up until recently I think it either was working or it at least it was broken but still in a way people could see what they wanted so no one cares. But moving to the new image server means that we're getting errors now because I think this player code, or these restrictions, are missing the image sizes and the new image server doesn't know what to do with that and breaks the image

So I guess [the Experience] team would be the one to ponder what to do here, if we treat player code 32 stuff with the restrictions in a different way on WC or what. I'm really not sure where to start with all that yet

Affects c. 10k items?

Next step is probably to check in with Ashley to update/clarify the above.
