Domain expired again?

Been about a year since #9 so maybe that's it.

I'm happy to donate a few years worth of the domain to avoid this from happening for a while @SteffenL @nothingismagick

The one who holds ownership of the webview.dev domain name is @nothingismagick. I reached out to him about this in a Discord DM on July 10, 2024. He acknowledged a week later, but since then I have been unable to get any kind of response about this.

He has been present in the Tauri Discord server so I'm not quite sure what's going on.

I tried to post publicly in that server too a few times but couldn't get a response.

@nothingismagick and I were able to chat briefly on video the other day.

The main talking points were the expired domain, what to do about it, and the idea of transferring it.

Although there are a couple things that need to be sorted out before any of the above can turn into results, the conversation was positive.

There has been no visible progress, and I haven't been able to get any kind of response despite nagging for the last 2 weeks.

The domain name is/was well beyond the expiry date, and is now listed for sale on Namecheap at a staggering acquisition price of nearly $4,000 with a renewal price of just over $200/yr.

Although this outcome is disappointing, the domain name isn't to me worth the asking price and running cost, and therefore I'm going to accept the loss of the webview.dev domain name and move on.

How about webviewlib.com? It's available. Could create a cloudflare org and invite all the members here so that if one person goes AWOL someone else can still renew it.

I worry about a couple things if only project maintainers pay for the domain:

  • Long-term funding. From my point of view, maintainers have largely been inactive for quite some time, so 1–2 people might be stuck paying every time (if they feel like it). It would be nice if money could be pooled by anyone and not just a few project maintainers.
  • It seems like billing might be complicated. I couldn't easily find a way to give each member access to only the billing information they need.

One way I can imagine doing this is to open a business PayPal account for donations and a Cloudflare account integrated with that PayPal account. It's an option I'm exploring for the lack of better ideas.

I thought about the idea of registering a non-profit organization that isn't directly tied to this project, but it cannot be done in my home country with less than 2 people and a fair amount of hassle for everyone involved.

Do you have a preference between lib in the name as a prefix or suffix? I thought a .so variant would be cool but not so much the price. I might personally be leaning toward the prefix style and .{com, org}, with .org being the main domain.
