Use stock version from ossec.conf for configuration in Wazuh manager
Study the possibility of using a stock version of ossec.conf for all automation processes.
Template use in:
- wazuh-ansible/
- https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh-ansible/blob/4.2/roles/wazuh/ansible-wazuh-manager/templates/var-ossec-etc-ossec-server.conf.j2
- wazuh-docker/
- https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh-docker/blob/4.2/production_cluster/wazuh_cluster/wazuh_manager.conf
Wazuh manager in
- wazuh-wazuh/
- https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/blob/4.2/etc/ossec.conf
- https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/tree/4.2/etc/templates/config
- This is the structure of templates. That in installation, create the ossec.conf for the installed operating system.
I attach the newly installed ossec.conf from an Ubuntu 20.04 system

We had an analysis meeting with @okynos and @ teddytpc1:
Problem analyzed:
- Lack of a stock ossec template.
- Need to make changes in modules in:
- Installation and post installation processes in wazuh-docker, wazuh-ansible, and other private repos.
- The current ossec.conf does not follow the yaml standard. That would allow changing values of modules and parameters in a simple way.
Options analyzed:
- Apply the post installation change, generating:
- In the case of repeated fields, a duplication of modules ...
- in the case of unique fields, deletion and change of values.
- This is the option that was chosen to evaluate and analyze the timing and implications of possible problems.
- Create a stock version of ossec.conf to be used from all automation repos, ansible, docker, and others.
Steps to follow:
- Consult with the CORE team:
- About times and standard that they will use, in the new version of ossec.conf
- CICD team:
- Reanalysis on performing a PoC based on current ossec.conf conditions
- Evaluation of pros vs cons, and times of the possible jobs that are opened from the information that we will be collecting.
I quote the CORE team's response (@chemamartinez):
The ossec.conf is generated at installation time from these templates https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/tree/master/etc/templates/config, depending on the OS it assembles the config, joining that of each component. Here you can see how it is mounted https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/blob/9ace2581e37afb9e16dc11d9fdb4c7a9c87fdd97/src/init/inst-functions.sh#L436 Then there is a plan to pass the current XML to YML but I can't find an issue right now about this, and there is no estimated date for this.
This issue will be addressed here:
