JER does not work on fabric when connecting to a (vanilla) server

I'm experiencing a weird issue: When using the fabric version, JER does not display (aka, all JEI integrations don't work, like ore distribution) when I connect to a dedicated server after starting the game. If instead I load into a singleplayer world first, everything is fine, even if I connect to the server later.

I have tested with the same JEI and JER versions for forge, and everything works fine there. I have also compiled on the most recent commit from this repository (0f66af1acf16ddde05521405b70374a393280387), which doesn't fix this bug either.
