Print numbers on screen?

Hi guys, Thanks in advance for your help! I'm trying to print numbers on the 1.54" screen. Spaced evenly across the whole screen in the same pattern as my 3x4 membrane keypad. Which I can do. But then I want to change- for example- the number 1 to a dash ("-"), while leaving all other numbers unchanged on the screen. This I can't do. Is it me? Or perhaps this can't be done? Thanks alot.
