epd2in7 HAT shows only static and noise

I have followed the wiki setup, cloned this repo to my pi zero 2w, and started the example code exactly as is for a 2.7" (black/white) display. After running the example, I get only static and noise not the screen. I have no errors in the output. Anyone else seen this?
