App doesn't send any SMS

Open Tidominer opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

When I tried to send a silent message to my other phone, my phone showed me a message that said "This action may cost money..." (smth like that), ane I accidentally clicked on 'Cancel', and now when I try to send a silent message again, It doesn't work. Also when I whitelist my second phone, and send a sms that contains '[ping]' to my first phone using the second phone, I don't receive the data sms. I tried Reinstalling and clearing the app's data, But it doesn't work.

Hi. A few off-hand thoughts:

  • I haven't touched this repo in forever.. but I'll definitely look into it
  • great timing.. since:
    • I've had CDMA service for years and was forced to switch to GSM earlier this week.. as the result of T-Mobile buying Sprint.. and subsequently dismantling their CDMA network
    • "silent messages" only work with GSM.. and I was never able to test this feature.. until now (TBA)
  • any message about "this action may cost money.." is coming from Android.. it's not part of the app
    • possibly a runtime permission issue with Android 6+; what version of Android are you using?
    • you may want to..
      • go to: Android Settings > Apps > this app > Permissions
      • if there are any required runtime permissions unchecked, then check them now
      • run this app again.. and see if that made any difference

I'll take a closer look sometime in the next few days.. run a few tests.. report back what I find.

I'm still shopping around for a better GSM handset.. had to downgrade to an old one with Jellybean that had been sitting in a drawer.. since the shiny new one that I purchased and wanted to use turned out to be incompatible with T-Mobile (even though its specs say it has the necessary frequency bands and it's globally unlocked). Crash course in the joys of GSM.. I guess.

I'm using a Samsung A52 that has Android 11 on it. Your app only needs SMS and Location permissions and I have granted it both of them.

PS: until I can get a version of this app that works for you, in the meanwhile.. here is a partial list of other similar apps:

  • Finder
  • SMS my GPS
    • fork of this app that took the original idea and ran with it

I haven't tested them.. can't vouch for them.. but you might find them useful.
