It would seem that you need a new type of command, e.g., system or defaults, that the user runs periodically and understands that it isn't kept in sync in realtime.

The linked page seems to be missing any mention of `"calver-by-date"`.

Seems like you just need to tweak the local_scheme in pyproject.toml or setup.py. Honestly, though, I've switched to setuptools-git-versioning and it's been rock solid for my simple use case.
