Alaska 2017 State has extra area?

Open frumh002 opened this issue 4 months ago • 0 comments

Hey there,

I noticed that Alaska's state shapefile from TIGRIS for 2017 contains an extra bit (see below). I figured this would be taken care of when we erase water but alas it's not really (the first image is erasing 1% and the second is erasing 5%). This year is the only one where it seems to be pulling in the triangle-ish area in the gulf - West of Juneau. Does anyone know how to get rid of this area? I have other workarounds if needed but just curious? OR anyone know why this is happening only for 2017?

Erasing 1%: Image

Erasing 5%: Image

Any other year besides 2017: Image

Here is the code I used to get this:

alaska <- tigris::states(year = 2017) %>%
  filter(NAME == "Alaska") %>%
  st_transform(crs = 5070) %>%
  tigris::erase_water(area_threshold = 0.99)
