Carousel example doesn't update live regione with every command

I'm inspecting ARIA live region at https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/carousels/working-example/

<div aria-live="polite" aria-atomic="true" class="liveregion visuallyhidden">Item 2 of 3</div>

The content of the live region is updated only when use press on side arrows or stop/resume the auto scrolling, but not when user press on page number directly. So: the example seems incomplete to me.
