Add new range for 'Bohlen-Pierce scale notation' including N, T, U, and Z clefs

Open dspreadbury opened this issue 10 years ago • 10 comments

Georg Hajdu is working on special notations for the Bohlen-Pierce scale, and in particular requires four new clefs, based on the letters, N, T, U, and Z.

Nora Müller suggested that these clefs should be rendered using letterforms based on the Sütterlin font.

Need information about the hot spots for these clefs before I can proceed.

Nora-Louise Müller says:

"By now, I have been using N, T, U, and Z clefs. Regarding current fonts I can suggest two fonts that both Georg and I came along independently from each other, and they would make good models for SMuFL clefs:

http://www.dafont.com/de/18th-century-kurrent.font http://www.dafont.com/de/greifswaler-deutsche-schrift.font

This type of handwriting / font, to be precise, is called "current" ("Kurrent" in German). "Sütterlin" is the name of a simplified current handwriting which was designed by Ludwig Sütterlin, to be taught in elementary schools, comparable to "Lateinische Ausgangsschrift" etc. Sütterlin fonts can be found online, too, but they do not look as elegant as a "real" current font."

Georg further adds:

"I'm using the Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift font with the following specs (clef_name, character x_offset y_offset font size;):

BP-N-clef, N 0 -1 "Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift" 28; BP-U-clef, U 0 -1 "Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift" 28; BP-T-clef, T 2 -1 "Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift" 28; BP-Z-clef, Z 4 -4 "Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift" 28;

Offsets are calculated in respect to the first regular staff line counting from the bottom. Note that the additional, 6th staff line is below. Hence, this would be the second visible staff line."

Adding a file showing the clefs currently used by Nora-Louise Müller in MuseScore. She says:

"Personally, I prefer the 18th Century Current font since it looks very elegant and "fluently handwritten". A little disadvantage of this specific font is that the letters are relatively wide - wider than the standard traditional clefs, which may lead to compatibility problems in scores because they may partly cover the time signature. This problem is avoided in the Greifswaler font where the letters are somewhat slimmer."

Heinz Bohlen says:

"Just to let you know that I am absolutely happy with Greifswal(d)er Kurrent to be used for clefs like N, T, U and Z. It reminds me of what I learned in school in 1941/42. That should have been Sütterlin, but since our teacher didn't care to write the letters exactly vertically, it looked more like Greifswalder. That didn't last long, though. All of a sudden, one morning we were told with an impish grin that we should rather forget what we learned so far, and that the new medium was to be Latin Script."

This was issue #249 in the old repository, and the attachments can still be found there.

Putting this issue on hold for now until one or all of Heinz Bohlen, Nora-Louise Müller or Georg Hajdu are members of the community group and have agreed to the CLA.

Hey Daniel, just stumbled upon this exchange. How would I become member of the community group and agree to the CLA? It would be nice to reopen this topic!

Sorry for the long delay in coming back to you. To join the CG, go here and click Join or Leave This Group on the right-hand side, and then follow your nose.

Dear Daniel,

I have a cold and therefore a stuffed nose (really!). Forgive me this metaphor but I'd appreciate it if you could be a bit more specific. Is this an invitation to join the group (which I'm already a member of) or is there some information you'd like to share with me such as the inclusion of the BP clefs in the SMUFL specification as requested?

Thank you for your clarification,

Georg

If you're already a member of the CG, then for the time being there's nothing further for you to do. When I come to implement the Bohlen-Pierce scale notation characters in SMuFL, I'll reach out if I need any clarification from you.
