Rotary Encoder plugin does not work

RP3 running latest version of Volumio. Installed plug in using ADAfruit encoders. Common ground to pin 6 (GPIO ground). Attempted to use 23 clk; 24 dt; and 17 for switch. No joy for volume control or any other function. Tried other renditions: 23; 24; 25; reinstalled; restarted. Still no results. The plugin does not appear to be working at all. Any input as to where the problem might be? The encoders work; I tried them with a Bob Rathbone set up on a different internet radio; and they function properly. Must be something in the plug in not working. Any help would be appreciated.
