Allow strings as arguments to subtype for array (and similar)?

Consider whether it would be possible to allow type lookups during type creation, so that subtype and similar can be easily passed in as string identifiers rather than the looked-up types. This may impact performance and consideration needs to be given to object creation when templates may just be reference templates, etc.
