I wish more software and games (companies) went the way of Blender 3D

Blender, a 3D animation program, was initially closed source software. When the company behind it went bankrupt, they created a crowdfunding campaign, open-sourcing Blender for a one-time payment of €100,000.

They also since continued to develop the software under the non-profit Blender Foundation, also entirely supported by donations. They now have dozens of employees and hundreds of thousands, if not millions of users.

I think many games and software tools and their communities could benefit from a similar setup - many become abandonware, or as with many older games, become simply forgotten or unplayable as they lose compatibility, and since the software is still closed source, they don't get as much attention from modders as they could.
