Description
Quartus Prime Lite is used for FPGA development. This is an essential application for students and enthusiasts. It would be amazing if this application were to be added to the void-linux packages. I currently have windows installed on an external USB simply to run this one application. Quartus is currently available for Ubunut, Red hat and SUSE SLE: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/programmable/support-resources/design-software/os-support.html
Does the requested package meet the package requirements?
Required
Is the requested package released?
No
Last time I used Quartus I downloaded it from Intel's website. I don't think it's available ON Ubuntu, RHEL and Suse. I think it's available FOR Ubuntu, RHEL and Suse. Meaning you can install it on said distros but you are using Intel's installer, not an official package.
~~I'm guessing Void could not even legally redistribute the binaries. I suppose you can try checking their license but I would be pessimistic about that. EDIT: According to Intel, Quartus Lite "does not need a license". I think they meant that they that the license is free of charge, BUT I guess you could look into the End User License Agreement, which is part of the installer. Perhaps it's OK to distribute the binaries.~~ Edit, quote from license file:
2.2.3. You may not use, copy, modify, distribute, or otherwise
transfer the Licensed Software or any portions thereof, or permit any
remote access thereof by any person or entity.
I guess you could somehow package the installer or create an installer for the installer but proper package cannot be created.
Imo it would not be worth it to maintain such package even if it were legal because users would have an inferior experience (unsupported platform) compared to using distrobox with an Ubuntu container. Here the space saved by not using containers does not even matter when the software is like 6 GB big. (note: I am not a Void maintainer, so this is not an "official" opinion)
