AWS CLI version 2, the latest major version of AWS CLI, is now stable and recommended for general use. But the current package on void is aws cli version 1 only. i.e. https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/blob/master/srcpkgs/aws-cli/template

is there any reason why it would need to be a new package instead of just updating the current one?
version 1 is incompatible with version 2. Many options are changed and not supported in version 1. It shouldn't be upgraded directly. Otherwise, it will break many of the scripts which are depended on version 1.
