How do I get the creation time of a vm created using a template

I tried using config.createDate to get the creation time of the vm, but I found that a lot of virtual machines created using templates show the creation time of the template, not the actual time of the virtual machine. How do I get the creation time of a vm created using a template. thanks!!!!
