Can not access PhotonOS after upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0

Open ozdeadmeat opened this issue 4 years ago • 4 comments

I see docker initializing but I do not have any console access and the server is not getting an IP address. Is there a way to force access to the OS to work out what is wrong?

Single solid cursor on the top of the screen.

Would you please provide more details?

  • Which build of Photon OS 3.0 was installed? Where there any custom built packages installed on this 3.0 VM? What packages were installed before upgrade?
  • Which build of Photon OS 4.0 was used for upgrade?
  • What steps were followed to upgrade from Photon OS 3.0 to Photon OS 4.0?
  • Would it be possible to share /var/log/journal folder from the Photon OS VM?

The upgrade should not impact the console access and for that you can investigate from the hypervisor logs where this VM is running.

If console access were available, you could follow steps listed at https://vmware.github.io/photon/assets/files/html/3.0/photon_troubleshoot/resetting-a-lost-root-password.html up till the point of getting the shell prompt to investigate into the system.

Had the same issue after upgrading from 3 to 4. Networkd had become disabled. Enabled it fixed network issue. For the console, I had the same issue, single solid cursor. I was able to get login prompt on tty2.

I had the same issues. It seems like these two services get disabled. Just reenable/start them (and reboot):

systemctl enable systemd-networkd.service
systemctl enable [email protected]
