[Bug]: Cannot obtain logits

Open athmanar opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Your current environment

I do not want logprobs but want the logits of shape Batch Size,Tokens,Dictionary similar to model.generate(return_logits=True) in huggingface. Is this possible?

The output of `python collect_env.py`

🐛 Describe the bug

I would like to obtain the logits by using llm.generate(). How can I obtain that?

(probably same as https://github.com/vllm-project/vllm/issues/16546)

(probably same as #16546)

Logprobs and logits are different actually..logits are unnormalized last layer outputs of shape tokens x dictionary..they are very important for uncertainty estimation

This might help depending on your requirements: https://github.com/vllm-project/vllm/issues/15131#issuecomment-2748761337

I think you should make this a feature request rather than a bug. I do think easier access to logits is a feature that should be considered.

g-eoj avatar Apr 18 '25 21:04 g-eoj

I'd argue lack of this feature (such as /v1/logits or /v1/rerank_logits endpoint) is a major shortcoming,.. while not technically a bug, it is limiting the scope of usefullness of this project. vLLM as it stands now (correct me if I'm still wrong) cannot be currently used for reranking purposes (an essential step in high-performing RAG pipelines), which forces users to switch to competing frameworks such as Triton Inference Server and its Python backend or write custom APIs using Flask or FastAPI.

For scoring and re-ranking query-document pairs, you typically want the logits for the prompt/inputs, which are only accessible in the initial forward call (as in HuggingFace output.logits). AFAIK, no current workarounds exists for getting prompt/inputs logits from vLLM (only logits for new tokens can be obtained, as they are generated, utilizing a custom logits processor). And unnormalized (raw) logits needed for the reranking use case cannot be recovered from log probs). Both */rerank and /score endpoints, both of which return the same normalized values are also affected by this unwanted normalization issue.

Please increase priority of this feature request.
