Paste w/Auto-Formatting
I checked to see if an issue was already made about this, but I didn't see one so I'll try my luck here.
The Problem:
This just happens to be my workflow and how my brain works, but I tend to be at my most creative when I'm stealing time away from my job to write/type out what's on my mind. And being that I'm working at an office on a computer that I don't own, installing stuff for personal reasons is kind of a no-no. So I typically type everything up on my phone and then transfer it to my computer via some sort of PasteBin service where I can back it up in my software of choice (previously QOwnNotes; now NovelWriter and into a private Git repo).
This leads to the issue that all of my quotation marks and apostrophes end up being the non-specific ones that the average keyboard usually spits out instead of the smart ones that are handled by word processors and when typing manually into NW. The dialogue highlighting issue can be fixed by inputting those "dumb" quotes into the proper spot, but now I'll have a mixture of both if I continue typing which isn't fun for me to look at.
The Request:
No idea if this is possible or not, but I would love if there was an extra paste option that was somehow able to emulate the act of inputting all the text manually and it would go all of the auto-replacement checks that would normally happen. I.e. replacing all those dumb quotes with smart quotes and apostrophes along with whatever else like ellipses. It doesn't need to be something like a preference setting, but moreso something like how Word or LibreOffice Writer will have multiple paste options like "Keep Source Formatting" or "Paste w/o Formatting." In this case it would be called "Paste w/ Auto-Formatting" or something that conveys how it would be used. An extra option in the right-click or the "Edit" ribbon dialog.
You can already select a piece of text and click "Replace Straight Single Quotes" or "Replace Straight Double Quotes" from the Format menu. There is no such feature for dash and ellipsis, so there you have to do it manually.
Huh. I may be stupid. I was browsing all the tabs and didn't even catch that. Thanks! I will use that from now on!
I still think it'd be neat as an extra paste option, but I'm not all that pressed anymore.
