Feature request: support entering location as place name

Open vladh opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

The user should be able to enter their location in the form "London, UK" or similar. Currently, the only options are geolocation (which people might not want to enable, as I don't) or entering your latitude and longitude (which is cumbersome to figure out).

I don't have time to contribute this right now, but might in the future, so I thought I would open an issue for now.

I agree that would be a useful feature. I'll look into it.

  • while i can see the appeal of it,
  • i do think that adding the geolocation in coordinates is actually better, as this shows the transition of times according to true local sun-time,
  • rather than just the "standard" time of the place, which is usually off by upto half hour.

So, a correct way in my opinion is to find a middle ground:

  • add a note that: "Please add geolocation for showing the true-local sun-phases" (or times of day? or whatever that's called

And:

  • Picking the location based on "Standard times of countries" like London, UK mentioned above, will actually (internally) be picking the related coordinate,
  • and there will be an option to specify an offset - maybe aided with a preview of world map
  • the offset set to zero by default

Though the idea of offset may seem weird - but it will add more emphasize on the importance of true local sun time, which is all this sun clock is about.
