Merge annotations branch with main

The annotations branch has search for annotations in multiple databases and automatic retrieval and adding of annotations, eliminating the need to go to external databases and search/enter external ids.

The annotations branch was up-to-date 1 month ago. It had to be code-read and merged. Need: old feature of manually entering ids to the search annotations interface.
