Implementation is overly complex and not very accessible

The api should be reduced in its complexity. Provide a _ function out of the box. Just give the api a locale ("de_DE") and a path to a .mo file or even just a directory... and the rest should be handled automaticly. Also please update the docs/wiki as it seams its out of sync with current source.
