2 new plants for material production: Shardlime and Purple Shardlime

Open Eneocho opened this issue 2 years ago • 19 comments

Since you can make all metals, why not glass too? I've been thinking about adding this for a while, lets give it a shot.

What this does

Adds 2 new plants:

Shardlime:

shardlime tree Made by mutating Silicate Citrus, it harvests into glass shards. Is bioluminescent and glows white.

Purple Shardlime:

pshardlimetree Wasn't really sure about adding this one as well. Made by mutating Shardlime, it harvests into plasmaglass shards. I originally wanted it to need some splice with plasma cabbages so you'd actually splice the plasma into the glass, but I couldn't really think of a way to make that. Is bioluminescent and glows pink-purple.

Shards because the plant makes irregular glass shapes which break on harvest(TM), so you need to recycle or weld the pieces to get proper glass.

Why it's good

Completes the materialsplants list so an enterprising botanist can now stock all base materials.

  • rscadd: Shardlime and Purple Shardlime, made by mutating Silicate Citrus and Shardlime respectively, they harvest into glass/plasmaglass shards, which can be stored inside a regular plantbag.

i'd add a glass and plasmaglass solidification chem recipe instead, or just a way to turn the existing silicate fruits into glass(like chopping towercaps into wood, but with another tool?)

I thought of that too, but I liked the plant idea more and I couldn't really think of a way to solidify glass.

Just got an idea.

Can't Botanists already make & heat infinite sand?

Sand is an ore, you need the ore processor or recycling to make it glass.

Eneocho avatar Jul 27 '22 20:07 Eneocho

The recipe is a better idea, even if I like the shard gimmick of this plant.

Now add supermatter shard lime

angryturnip avatar Jul 27 '22 20:07 angryturnip

benoarch variant of the shardlime

Eneocho avatar Jul 27 '22 20:07 Eneocho

Thinking about it it wouldn't hurt to have both methods. You can quickly whip up the shardlimes if you don't mind welding or recycling the stuff, or do the chemical splice if you want prim n proper glass.

imagine the niggawatts if you could actually grow SM splinters...

I actually have something like that on the making, the idea is for a xenoarch plant that is extremely demanding and dangerous (like a shard) but very slowly makes splinters, something like once every 20 minutes slow. It eats oxygen and shits out plasma, can't be harvested without gloves without harming (thorns), it eats the pests and weeds (it ashes them), naturally increases the room temperature to 1000°C and can't survive in pressures higher than 404.60kpa, but can survive in 0kpa and is immutable. The idea is for a plant that must be treated like a faux-supermatter.

something like once every 20 minutes slow.

terrible if you want retard power, you need to add tons of splinters to a full crystal, and by the time xenoarchs get back from the roid, extract and plant the stuff the shuttle's usually called anyway getting your plant and waiting more than an hour before you can even make a crystal, and then another hour to get it powerful is sorta useless

You forget you can clip your plant with plant clippers (or wirecutters) for extra seeds, so you can effectively grow infinite amount of these currently hypothetical plants simultaneously as soon as you get one (1) seed. That is, as long as you can keep them all alive. It's exponential growth here, the 20m limit example would work as a soft cap against mass production because you'd have your hands full with 3, let alone 10 or 20.

Eneocho avatar Jul 31 '22 14:07 Eneocho

soft cap against mass production

why? let the hypothetical spacemen mass grow the splinters once they throw about 10 into the shard it's gonna be making so much heat they'll be forced to scream ";ME AM PLAY GOD" and shut it down, or risk a delam(one that won't be caused by a welderbomb for a change)

chance to cut hands/gloves when picking up?

incakola avatar Aug 04 '22 09:08 incakola

Probably on another PR, but I like the idea. However, these spawn standard glass/plasmaglass shards. Could be made so they're thorny and you need gloves to harvest without getting stung.

Can't Botanists already make & heat infinite sand?

I believe that is technically an exploit too, which means that its liable to be patched out the day someone can be arsed to do so.

Shoveling grass to make sand as a botanist is an intended mechanic, you can even get some seeds and fruit (beets, potato, carrot) when making sand, since you "found it on the grass". There's also the clay pots which require sand to be made or the dirt patches which require sandstone to be made, which you can source via the aforementioned method. Heating doesn't work as far as I know, you can't even use a welder or whatever on sand to "heat" it up.

Implemented, you cut yourself when harvesting if you don't have gloves on.
