No more Christmas in July (for now)

Seems like people really don't like Snaxi even though it's rarely played during July. They don't have the Christmas spirit... Consider my other PR #32966 too while voting. While it may be removed for July, you could still play it on the weekends, I think this is a good compromise

What this does

  • No Snaxi in July

Why it's good

  • give the people what they want

Changelog

:cl:

  • tweak: No more Christmas in July

The boxbaby clique made #32876 immediately at the start of July hoping to fearmonger about "Snaxi spam" in hopes of getting it removed. Now that the data has shown them wrong, they've completely reversed tactics: it's not that it's getting voted too much, it's not getting voted enough! It's all rationalizations. They'll say whatever they can to get what they want.

They're getting desperate - with only one week left in the month, they realize it could be months before they can galvanize public interest in removing non-Box maps.

Kurfursten avatar Jul 24 '22 01:07 Kurfursten

While we may not have had snaxi spam this year, we certainly had (or at least it felt like we had) last year. Fear of future snaxispam is not unfounded, kurf.

Eneocho avatar Jul 24 '22 01:07 Eneocho

i was never really around last year ever since the secban request how bad was the snaxi spam

WindowsErrors avatar Jul 24 '22 01:07 WindowsErrors

I just remember the pop dropping in half during primetime more often than not during snaxi season.

Eneocho avatar Jul 24 '22 01:07 Eneocho

i mean i remember the pop straight up dying but was it really like 5 snaxi rounds every day or something

WindowsErrors avatar Jul 24 '22 02:07 WindowsErrors

Can't really remember. Though even 1 daily would feel like too much for me. Lord knows I despise the constant shuttle shuffling.

Eneocho avatar Jul 24 '22 03:07 Eneocho

I remember one of the biggest reasons why people still don't like snaxi is because when it was first being added there were people who "tested" it at various population levels, and by that I mean there were multiple cases of admins forcing snaxi at 10-15 players thereby leaving many players with a bad taste of cock in their mouthes about this new map

I started playing spess about a year after snaxi was introduced, my disdain for the map is organic.

Kurfurst

I've played on Snaxi about 3-4 times this month and each time people seemed very irate. I like Snaxi though, and as I said, having a different mechanic making it available throughout all months during primetime on the weekends seems like a better option than just one extra map through the month. Snaxi isn't available until at least 30 players, so it would actually be more available this way, but at least there would be other options.

Most of these rounds ended pretty quick because of wizards fireballing, frozen core opening, revs blowing shit up, etc.

It's always just few guys that are extremely vocal about how pissy they are they didn't get to play Box. They believe if they moan enough they will be able to take away other people's fun. Tale as old as time. You gotta remember that these people outright lie about the data on the map constantly and if they complain about it, it's always very vague or extremely out of date. For example, they'll out themselves when they say "one window got smashed to the frozen core!" oblivious that the window turfs are unsimmed now so that doesn't do anything. There's also always a lot of vague "I remember years ago Snaxi killed my son..." posts where someone makes up stats about some undefined period in the past. Eneo in particular is a frequent perpetrator of his Big Lie that Snaxi "halves pop" - something data has never shown even once. They know if they just keep screaming and lying the weak willed will buckle.

Don't try to sell me on that "approve this pr which will be balanced out by another" stuff. They're separate atomic changes and you are not cutting off any other map in the pool at the same time as you open up all of them. I've seen this trick a hundred times.

Kurfursten avatar Jul 24 '22 15:07 Kurfursten

I'm not using any anecdotes, just what I've seen. I'm too autistic to be emotional about it. I think I played on snaxi every time it was voted and won this month (except with the wizards) and I have never voted it. I would like to think I'm being impartial, and that this would be beneficial to everyone having these two separate PRs merged. That way, the snaxi lovers can get their map while the others can have their maps too. I believe going by emojis is the best way to decide whether the PR passes in this case, and ignore all the pleas, and cries from all parties.

I don't understand.

Anyway, my thought-process regarding this is that whenever people see a new or "novel" map, they click. If everything is in rotation, then it won't be a kneejerk reaction to vote on a "novel" map, and hopefully the novelty would wear off and people actually vote for what they enjoy playing, rather than thinking, "shiny new exciting!" (xoq, snaxi, line, island, and nerve have this problem)

Honestly, I would prefer if we had statistics to get the metric for good and bad maps, rather than guessing what people think. Since we don't have that, I would rather just give people more options and let them choose what they want, which would be for everyone's benefit.

adacovsk avatar Jul 24 '22 15:07 adacovsk

You gotta remember that these people outright lie about the data on the map constantly.

What data? This station is not active enough to produce any meaningful datasets about maps, there simply is not enough active rounds for there to be any statistical significance. There's no "data" that supports any side of the argument.

The only statistic that is really relevant to whether the map should stay in July or not, is whether people enjoy playing it. The only way to determine that is a server poll.

Eneo in particular is a frequent perpetrator of his Big Lie that Snaxi "halves pop" - something data has never shown even once. They know if they just keep screaming and lying the weak willed will buckle.

Hyperbole perhaps, but not a lie. I've seen a consistent drop in server pop whenever snaxi gets voted. Maybe not half, but it certainly FEELS like half the pop left. Snaxi is like castle. Fun to play every now and then, but having castle available (and voted) more than just once a full moon is too much. Even once a day Snaxi is too much for me, I genuinely don't enjoy the map unless going full jobbie. The crew interactions are limited, there's always a risk of freezing to death, pulse demons are extremely overpowered being able to leave the station chunk and go to another and the shuttles take too long to take you to another area (going through planetside is laggy as all hell). The few times I've enjoyed snaxi have been during buses that take away the focus from the map, like one where a syndie became a damage-less yeti. I'm only giving my personal perspective on the topic. If you claim I'm lying about population loss please provide counter evidence and I'll gracefully drink the corn syrup.

Eneocho avatar Jul 24 '22 20:07 Eneocho

Pulse demon is a pretty new antag, it definitely wasn't considered. Maybe there's something that can be done there. I think that's a legitimate complaint. Perhaps moving through the outside cables slows it down so that he can transfer but he's easier to chase while going through outside, making it very unadvisable unless hiding out or in a heavy snowstorm.

I do see some lag the first time you go outside (as that fuck awful sound file has to be loaded), but then the lag goes away. Frankly I wouldn't miss it if we took out the wind sound entirely but I don't know how people would feel about that.

Kurfursten avatar Jul 24 '22 20:07 Kurfursten

To be frank I hate snaxi. I have played several rounds on that map, and they were all terrible. Some of them were long and drawn out, some of them were short and anticlimactic. I went in to see what unsimulated windows you were talking about because I planned to raise hell about unsimulated turfs used on station for a live map being used as a positive example of the maps design. But I was unable to locate what windows you were talking about. I was able to just shoot out the windows from atmos into the air chamber, oxygen miner, and nitrogen miner to freeze the distro line. But I'm looking through all the windows leading into the frozen core, and all the windows leading into the rooms leading into the frozen core and I don't see any unsimulated turfs between them. Did you misspeak and mean that the outside is unsimulated? Or the airlocks? Those are, but I don't mind that too much as those are outside and supposed to be a planetoid's atmosphere which would be far too complex to simulate meaningfully with byond. The only reason I am writting so much about this is because I spent so long checking the windows in snaxi engineering on my now updated local copy for an unsimulated window that either does not exist at all or is surrounded by simulated turfs if it does, and by God will I somehow extract that time from you as well. But my major complaint about snaxi is that it is three different substation cut off by snow. This is awful and isolating. Something happening on one substation can just easily stay there. Adding to this isolation is how easy for people to 'space explore' now on this map. Grab a warm outfit and something to warm you up and you can wander out into the snow to presumably die where even if your sensors are on it won't matter because the paramedics if they exist are getting drunk in ghetto bar ignoring their CMO's radio requests.

The already sparse population we have is split among three substations and then further bled out by the ease of exploration. It is not a good map for our server even if it was perfectly executed because the base design does not match our reality. And it is not perfectly executed. If you desire I can make a server poll to ask the playerbase if this PR should be merged or closed. I could even instead make a poll asking the playerbase if they want snaxi at all at the moment, as I am also curious about the results.

dang and I thought after doing the "segmented department" design of wheel, taxi, island, and snaxi we finally got it right, butu I guess not apparently

Agreed. I've said many times that "isolation" is a bad gimmick for a highly social RP game. Also Kurf tagging this with "bad faith" is bullshit. The intent of the PR is clear and he just doesn't like it.

TGFH avatar Jul 30 '22 01:07 TGFH

maybe the bad faith was on the collabs' part because none of them merged it?

mfw snaxi draws 45 players, box wins and the players go down to 23

Can this guy stop making PR's now? This is the first time I've looked at this github in months and I'm literally seeing the same exact caliber of PR's as before. PR's to force his map and PR's to shit on other people's maps

Let's get a server vote and settle the dispute once and for all then. Clearly if Snaxi is so great the vote will go your way.
