Add a fallback for the mdx-components file

Open remcohaszing opened this issue 2 years ago • 9 comments

What?

Provide a fallback for the mdx-components file.

Why?

Given a user uses the Next.js app directory, and doesn’t have an mdx-components file;

  1. If the user has @mdx-js/react installed, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, stating only client components may use React context.
  2. If the user doesn’t have @mdx-js/react installed, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, stating next-mdx-import-source-file could not be resolved.

How?

This fixes 2 by providing a fallback.

I suggest fixing 1, by completely removing all references to @mdx-js/react from the project.

@samcx would it be possible to get a review of this? @remcohaszing is a core contributor in the MDX ecosystem.

@remcohaszing I am not experiencing a cryptic error when using a create-next-app with the instructions below.

https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/configuring/mdx

(the experimental is required when using Turbopack dev) CleanShot 2024-06-27 at 12 07 05@2x

CleanShot 2024-06-27 at 12 07 47@2x

samcx avatar Jun 27 '24 10:06 samcx

Yes, it works well if you follow those instructions step-by-step.

Now delete mdx-components.tsx from your project and imagine one or more of the following:

  • You’re just skimming the docs.
  • You’re migrating from the pages directory to the app directory.
  • This is the 10th project you’re migrating to the app directory. You think you know what you’re doing by now.
  • You’re following instructions from an outdated blog post which tells you to install @mdx-js/react.
  • You remember in the past you had to install @mdx-js/react.
  • An old StackOverflow answer tells you to install @mdx-js/react.
  • The @next/mdx readme tells you to install @mdx-js/react`.
  • You’re simply not interested in providing any custom components.

Now you have to deal with those weird error messages. You can solve it. I can solve it too now. But for users the solution is really not obvious. They have to forget what they thought they knew about Next/MDX and carefully re-read https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/configuring/mdx.

@remcohaszing

As a general rule, I would always read the :nextjs-spin: App Router :docs: first—not all things are set up identically in App Router versus Pages Router. Also, I do not recommend Stack Overflow (responses can very easily be incorrect and wrong, and likely do not get updated frequently).

Ideally, the experience here with App Router would be much better, where all you would need to do is add an .mdx file and it just works. Something we need to improve on!

Blog posts can be dated—can you share which blog post you are referring to?

As a general rule, I would always read the :nextjs-spin: App Router :docs: first—not all things are set up identically in App Router versus Pages Router.

https://nextjs.org/docs/app and https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/upgrading/app-router-migration don’t mention MDX.

Also, I do not recommend Stack Overflow (responses can very easily be incorrect and wrong, and likely do not get updated frequently).

This is not about your or my personal experience. It’s about what users see.

Ideally, the experience here with App Router would be much better, where all you would need to do is add an .mdx file and it just works. Something we need to improve on!

Right, that’s exactly what this PR does.

Blog posts can be dated—can you share which blog post you are referring to?

No. I was just quickly listing reasons why people might not follow the official setup instructions step-by-step. I personally ran into this trying to migrate from the pages directory to the app router.

remcohaszing avatar Jun 27 '24 11:06 remcohaszing

@remcohaszing

This is not about your or my personal experience. It’s about what users see.

Right, but since a lot of things posted on Stack Overflow are stale or flat out incorrect, I would still recommend users to not look at Stack Overflow.

Right, that’s exactly what this PR does.

Great! I will take a look soon (currently almost at the end of my PTO)—not 100% sure yet if we should still still keep the mention of installing @mdx-js/react while removing the requirement for mdx-components.tsx for App Router.

samcx avatar Jun 27 '24 12:06 samcx

@mdx-js/react uses React context to provide the same functionality as mdx-components.tsx. This can be nice for use in SPAs, but it simply doesn’t work with RSC. It’s possible to have multiple MDX React contexts, and they can be nested, which I suppose can be nice, but is a niche use case. I would completely remove any references of @mdx-js/react from the Next.js repo as it’s mostly just confusing.

I think the main reason it’s still present in Next.js, is that MDX 1 required @mdx-js/react.

remcohaszing avatar Jun 27 '24 12:06 remcohaszing

It has been a while, but I rebased and added a test case.
