Encrypting system partition prevents boot (windows 10 on bootcamp - external disk)

Open FrostBird347 opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

Expected behavior

The computer asks for a password on startup.

Observed behavior

Computer starts up to a black screen, attempting to type in the password through both the mac's keyboard and an external one does not appear to work. I was able to start up in windows by force shutting down, rebooting the system back to mac and overwriting the EFI partition with a backed up version of the partition.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install windows on an external disk on mac (Tutorial)
  2. Install veracrypt and reboot into mac
  3. Make a backup of the EFI partition and reboot into windows
  4. Encrypt the system partition (it doesn't seem to matter if you select single-boot or multi-boot, the issue still occurs)
  5. Reboot computer and see a black screen
  6. Force shut down the computer and reboot into mac
  7. Restore the EFI partition from the backup
  8. Reboot into windows and see the user login screen
  9. Upon opening veracrypt, a window appears saying that the test failed and prompts the user to either try again or revert the changes.

Your Environment

VeraCrypt version: 1.25.4 (December 3, 2021)

Operating system and version: Windows 10 build 18363.418

Operating system and version (mac partition): OSX 10.14.6

System type: Macbook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)

Small side note, I was able to use the system encryption fine on a 2019 iMac. Although I do get the black screen (which doesn't happen on normal PCs, so it is a bug), it boots up normally if you put in your password then press enter twice. You have to press it twice because it asks for your password then your PIM, if you set one.

I have attempted to enter in the password and press enter twice on my macbook, however it doesn't appear to work, no matter how long I wait in-between keypresses or how simple the password is. Trying this with an external disk has no effect.
