Dark theme

Open rakleed opened this issue 4 years ago • 16 comments

Please add a dark theme to the Windows and Linux applications. Because using your application at night or in dark rooms is very unpleasant because of the bright white background.

@Rakleed, as you can see in the release notes, the dark mode of macOS has been supported since 1.24-Hotfix1.

@andreas-becker, but it would be nice to see dark theme support in Windows and Linux apps.

wow 16.04.2021, apx. 1 year after the first dark mode request and there is still no dark mode in Windows VeraCrypt. Thats really pity.

Well, thats happening because VeraCrypt is more or less a one man show. But @Exxinus, do you know what open source means? You can checkout the code, implement the feature and provide a pull request. If you're unable to implement it by yourself, either sponser @idrassi to implement the feature or wait till he have the time to implement.

that is just standard "showed you who's the boss" reply to impatient users comments. i've seen this everywhere in open source world and i shall call them both toxic approaches. instead, take a moment to think about the reality that is - a common joe will never implement the feature, nor will he donate, but instead will try to push his desire into developing. In this case, talking about a common feature that feels natural to be included. After all, it's 2023, all apps have dark theme support nowadays..

To be honest, I would never recall there's a dark theme missing in VC unless I read those comments. Perhaps it has something to do w/ the simple fact VC is a mission-critical security app for security-aware people? And who knows better about determining the app's feature set and setting priorities than its developer(s)?

Originally, dark theme idea comes from the photo & video editors which is obviously a far away domain from security.

Also, have you guys noticed the sole VC developer came back to the scene after a year-long unwanted hiatus?

I dunno, I've rather appreciated the new stable VC release just introduced BLAKE2s pseudorandom mixing function than some feature unrelated to the OPSEC measures.

So your rant is kinda absurd. Call me toxic.

To get back on topic: According to the VC doc's, the Windows client's GUI is based on the C++ MFC library. And this one looks like it's obsolete, dark theme support is not officially planned and so I guess its implementation in the VC GUI is non-trivial and the GUI might eventually have to be ported to a more modern framework/library should it ever feature a dark theme on the Win platform...

Adding the fact dark theme seems to be a low priority in VC/Win (understandably) to the mix, this might be the answer why there has been no effort going on to add it to this day.

what a pathetic way to defend ... something ... anything... really.. It should be very easy to make the program dark themed based on the settings/ties he made with the code. There is even a website that you can code it for you to make your program dark themed. All you need to do is to copy/paste. psssttt... it's really suspicious to see your profile 100% private and new with the date you 'expressed yourself'... anyways....

This software really needs an overhaul, i mean look, after hitting the 'Exit' button on it, it still stays minimized working in the background. For a software that promises the high lands of privacy is an ultimate NO with that attitude! That tells everybody how much this software desperately needs an update!

Moreover, the way you throw yourself with your comment after a comment of your own post is just pathetic. Dark theme is a standard asset within the 21st century of computing. People like it (not to mention many of us work in the night) and as an author you need to provide that. You don't like it? You move out!

what a pathetic way to defend ...

No sir, your reasoning is what's pathetic. Complaining because you don't get your favourite dark theme for the whole desktop, even for apps you're not even looking at for several hours/day while at the same time you're not willing to pay up for the work of your fellow devs to implement your wish nor pushing your own commit.

Not wiling to pay? Not able to push a commit? Just accept the way your software works. Or find an alternative. This should be obvious.

And the Exit button thing? You don't even feel like reading the doc's? At this point, you're just a troll so don't expect me to waste any more time with you.

I seriously wonder where this toxicity come from. In any case, stop polluting the thread with vague off-topic rants.

OK folks let the dev's use this issue (feature request) for what it is for: finding a solution to finally ship dark mode on Windows. That's all I'm interested in from a users' perspective, I don't care about the "interpersonal difficulties" here, in other repos those comments would have been minimized already :-)

bcutter avatar Jan 06 '24 20:01 bcutter

Where is dark mode on VeraCrypt that was requested? What is developer doing to make that happen? Looks like nothing. Pathetic ignorance.
