Creating encrypted volumes in non-partitioned drive space

Currently, an encrypted volume can only exist in a partition - and this gives away the fact that there is encrypted data in there. Why not make it possible to create an encrypted volume on a non-partitioned drive (or in a block of non-partitioned space, for instance after the last partition and until the end of drive space)?
