Reset System

Open egs2003 opened this issue 2 years ago • 8 comments

installed the supported ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso in vbox vdi fixed size. Installed vtoyboot-1.0.18 release. Renamed VDI file to ubuntu.vdi.vtoy. Boot it, select it and got the message "reset system". All tested pcs (2 in sum) reboot.

I had problem like this too. Only "Reset System" then reset itself. Tried both VDI & VHD

I have the same issue with my hp elitebook 1030 g4. I've tried both UEFI and Legacy modes and ventoy options such as "compatibility mode", "uefi mode" and "grub mode". In all cases i see "Reset System" for a second and then system is rebooting.

But it works perfectly well on my lenovo x201 and msi gs40 laptops -- after converting it into raw image (qemu-img convert -f vdi -O raw image.vdi.vtoy image.img).

My setup details:

  • linux mint 20.2 cinammon
  • 90 GB fixed vdi drive
  • uefi enabled in virtualbox
  • LVM with encryption
  • run vtoyboot-1.0.18
  • converted vdi to raw image (only this option made it work for at least some laptops)

I have also tried to create virtual disk for ubuntu desktop 20.04 and 20.04.3 with no success for both, no matter it was vhd, vdi or local/remote hdd. Just simple power down and restart, not even seen this error you guys taking about.

@XelorR just now try to convert to img and see maybe any luck with it on any my PC/Laptop. Do you boot straight as img without vtoy?

EDIT: Now i see that can be hardware problem, I took my old PC and boot linux from external hard drive with no problem with all images I just created.

Working on: Athermiter x79 motherboard with generic BIOS American Megatrends Inc. X79GA00E, 03/30/2020

Not-working on: Dell Precision 3510 BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 1.23.3, 8/4/2020 Dell Inspiron 7566 BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 1.9.0, 26/07/2021

UPDATE: I have figure out to run finally this images also on DELL laptops. So the key is completely remove/turn-off UEFI boot option and switch the bios under the Legacy mode. When I boot Ventoy in legacy mode I can successfully run my Linux images. I believe it can be some issues with fight between UEFIs, what makes "BIOS" crush? Not an expert however running Ventoy under Legacy mode solved problem to me for now. Also need Ventoy in MBR and switched of Secure Boot. I could be problematic if u want Windows already under UEFI, however I`m still able to run my old Windows using F12 and selecting boot as UEFI from menu. Hope it will help us as well.

@16pxdesign , i've tried:

  • .vdi.vtoy - not working
  • .vhd.vtoy - not working
  • .img.vtoy - not working
  • .vdi - not working
  • .vhd - works for windows images only, doesn't work for linux
  • .img - works for linux images only, both UEFI and Legacy; using GPT formatted ventoy USB and only for lenovo thinkpad x201 and msi gs40 laptops. Doesn't work with any mode on hp elitebook 1030 g4

@XelorR HP is usually very similar to Dell so it should work for u as well 😅 Try: make MBR latest Ventoy boot USB drive and make custom entry to image on your local disk. Then go F12? And there I had option "switch/use legacy mode" > accept/save. Next try boot legacy from USB device (again from f12) and choose your Linux. Hope it will hopefully work for you as well. I haven't yet working version directly from local SSD probably because I got two disks and one of them got Windows. I plan to format both, because I got message not found bootable.... . TRY Legacy Ventoy from usb stick and try boot Linux then from SSD directly. For now I have working ONLY boot USB and then selected vhd.vtoy or any other image from SSD (not sure I have finally tested img)

I get this error too and it reboots my computer when I boot into a Debian based Linux vDisk. I also tried this on all of my computers and cannot boot into the vDisk.
