Not able to boot with UEFI
Hi, I'm only able to boot any distro if I set BIOS to startup in Legacy mode in my Lenovo Thinkpad T450. When I choose UEFI (I use this mode with my Fedora installation) or support for both (UEFI + Legacy) it ends with a black screen after selecting the system from the list - without any error, need to reboot my notebook. I disabled CSM support and secure boot, have the newest BIOS version. The same usb drive works fine with UEFI on my PC, so it have to be something with thinkpad. Is there anything what I can do/check more?
I have a similar issue on my DELL lattitude laptop. It's old. Ventoy doesn't show up in UEFI devices unfortunately. Although this project https://github.com/pbatard/uefi-ntfs made my usb work in UEFI mode too, but I can't use it with ventoy since ventoy needs to reformat the whole drive. Hoping for ventoy to fix it hopefully.
Hi! I want to bring this topic back. I have a ThinkPad T450, and I am trying to boot images from UEFI, and this topic describes my issue pretty well. Everything in the UEFI BIOS is setup correctly, because Ventoy Grub Menu loads up fine, but when I want to boot to an ISO, it just shows a blinking underscore for a split second. But when I set my laptop to Legacy Mode, it loads fine. BTW, on the other laptop (Lenovo M490s) UEFI Ventoy loads perfectly fine, and I can use it normally. Hopefully someone will do something about it. If not, I am going to continue to use my WinSetupFromUSB Multiboot drive.
Regards.
Can you give some more info? Uefi64 boot? What isos work and what don't? Do windows ISOs boot?
UEFI64 In UEFI mode NOT a single ISO boots, but in Legacy mode, the magically boot (clonezilla/krd/win8.1/etc.).
Did you try pressing ctrl+i before selecting the iso?
I'll try tomorrow and give and update.
On Legacy mode, after using the Ctrl+i combination, it shows red text: Compatibility Mode. On UEFI, nothing shows up after clicking this combination.
OK. Sorry, I didn't realise it only worked in Legacy mode. Maybe @Ventoy can help? It might be nice to know if agFM UEFI grub2 menu system shows same issue - it is part of Easy2Boot - just make an Easy2Boot USB stick/hdd using a Windows 10 system and say 'Yes' when it asks if you want agFM. Then when finished, add your ISOs to the _ISO\MAINMENU folder and UEFI-boot to the 2nd partition. www.easy2boot.com P.S. It also adds a version of Ventoy - maybe you can try that too?
@NetMan134 @steve6375
Ctrl+i Compatible mode can work in both Legacy BIOS mode and UEFI mode.
@NetMan134 Maybe you can make a video about the whole process in UEFI mode.
@NetMan134
Are you sure the blinking underscore happened in UEFI mode ?
The bios mode is displayed in the bottom left corner of the main menu.(Just like the picture I give above).

And @steve6375, Ventoy on E2B has the same issue.
agFM?
It sort of works. But I cannot boot to Windows 8.1 Install ISO. Will add a link to the recording in about an hour.
And cloneZilla?
Works
Here is a link to the recording - https://youtu.be/FOsRrglV3ec
Thanks. Interesting. Presumably there is no later BIOS update for that system? It seems a strange issue.
I updated it a while ago, will check now with Lenovo's site
BIOS and all drivers are up to date
Please test in UEFI mode with the latest 1.0.44.

Mint booted successfully! Update 1. Now I am waiting for a Windows ISO - Booting wim file...... (This may take a few minutes, please wait) Update 2. I waited 'bout 10 minutes and nothing happend with Windows ISO. Update 3. Other linux ISOs work with GRUB2 mode
@ventoy In a nutshell: Linux ISOs boot. Windows ISO stays on this message: Booting wim file...... (This may take a few minutes, please wait). - Waited about 10 minutes and nothing happend
Confirming the same issue with ThinkPad T450s, W550s, and X250. No ISOs boot, at all. Newer systems like X1 Carbon 6th and 7th Gen and X390 have no problems.
Mode: UEFI (CSM no), Secure Boot:off ISOs tested: Windows 10 20H2/21H1 x64, Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS / 21.04, Fedora 34.
This is also happening to me. I don't know what to do
I'm just coming to confirm that I have the problems described above. V.1.0.47. ThinkPad T450 ctrl + r save the day....
I have found some strange issues with uefi booting and iso file not loading were fixed by resetting bios to default settings, including efi defaults for secure boot (even though it was disabled). My ideapad 300 was working fine, then it stopped loading Linux and windows ISOs and either returned to the ventoy menu or the LED flashed a lot before stopping and freezing. Loading bios defaults fixed it.
Tryed Ventoy today and had the same issue with iso's & black screen on my Thinkpad t450s.
I solved it reading here and by choosing the support for UEFI & Legacy in Bios Menu. Afterwards I selected to use Legacy first/ over UEFI. Afterwards ventoy with the iso of linux manjaro mate was working. Also my Windows installation is (should be) working as normal and was starting. Don't know yet if I need Uefi only if a linux manjara distro is installed on my t450s.
My Secure Boot option is/was off while testing.
This is also happening to me. This seems to be a common problem for Lenovo, does @ventoy have a better solution?

Whats wrong on my solution?

I prefer to make my installation in UEFI mode, since installations made in legacy mode can only boot in legacy mode and vice versa without the option to change it afterwards, as far as I'm concerned.

for any linux you can use UEFI - you just need to change boot type with CTRL+r
Recently tried to boot it on a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't boot. There was no error. When selecting the boot media from the BIOS it would just flash and instantly return to the same BIOS page. I didn't see any relevant settings that could be stopping it. My goal is to carry a flash drive that can always work on various computers for repair and such.

This is the fix for boot uefi in lenovo t450
Why doesn't ventoy give user the choice to boot an iso using these options immediately after selection of the iso from the menu? Then the user could choose how to boot the iso and would be aware of the options?

No, this is not a fix. Booting iso's only works in legacy mode.
With easy2boot there's no problem.
Confirmed... Annoying because you have to disable security features to be in legacy mode or "both" - but that is the only way to do it on some of these laptops. Then disable again when not using Ventoy I suppose.
Same issue here with Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd gen. Also hangs after "loading block io protocol XXXXXXX".

My TP X1 Carbon 3rd gen has the same problem, I am always stuck on "install block io protocol C512B298". But I can boot Ubuntu on GRUB2 mode.
