What happened?

I've been using a 512gb external SSD in enclosure to boot various linux distro's for some time now and it's worked fine on the various desktop's I've tried till now. I recently purchased two refurbished acer aspire 5 laptop's and upgraded the memory/ssd in them. I then went to install Manjaro linux onto the system using my ssd with ventoy installed. The system failed to recognize it as a bootable drive both with secure boot enabled and disabled. The bios does not give me an option to boot in anything but UEFI mode. I read the wiki regarding secure boot and did see the "linspire" or whatever choice a couple of times when using the boot menu. I finally flashed Manjaro's KDE iso directly from the ssd to a flash drive using etcher and it worked fine. I verified afterward that ventoy still worked fine on the desktop using the ssd. I had upgraded it to the latest at the time (1.0.80) ventoy.

I'm not sure what else to report but if provided with instructions I can run them and provide results/logs etc.

There are four options when making a ventoy usb disk MBR secure boot MBR nonsecure boot GPT secure boot GPT nonsecure boot

It is possible that one of these will give better results with some bioses Try GPT and nonsecure first?

Thank you. I created a ventoy usb using GPT instead of MBR and it recognized it just fine. Should GPT be the new "default" going forward instead of MBR?

It depends on the bios Older bioses may prefer MBR partitions whereas newer uefi bioses may boot uefi payloads better from a GPT drive. There is no Simple choice

Although Ventoy worked exactly as expected the Manjaro KDE iso hung on the Acer screen in both "Normal" and "Grub2" modes. This same iso was flashed via etcher to a flashdrive and worked fine. Not sure if it's related so I'm just reporting it.
