async/parallel support

this feature is longer term -- it would be nice to be able to run tests in parallel. generally, this should be fine since each test is run in its own namespace. there's a bit of research that will need to go into this, and undoubtedly some rework/redesign to accommodate. this is likely a post-v1 feature.
