please show example with screen shot where it only takes up the top 4th of the screen when the taskbar is on the side.

I have seen similar behavior, but locking Windows and signing back in resolves, just in case that works for you as well.

Same issue here. I have no reliable trigger so far: happened once during a graphic driver update, 3 times after playing Hell Let Loose (Unreal Engine) and fiddling with its Fullscreen/Windowed Fullscreen mode.

When the issue happens, everything related to window placement (windows anchoring & fullscreen) is borked on the primary screen (secondary screen is fine), and only uses the top 1/4 of the height of the screen but still uses its whole width. I'll try to take a screenshot next time.

I have the almost all the same conditions as OP:

  • Primary taskbar is vertical on secondary screen.
  • Windows 11 PRO (26100.4652)
  • Taskbar: Windows 10 EP
  • Start menu: Win 10
  • 3rd party software: FancyZones from PowerToys too (no zone defined for the primary screen)

I have a semi-reliable trigger for this - playing games set to "Fullscreen" mode, sometimes known as "Exclusive Fullscreen" (as opposed to "Borderless Windowed", "Borderless Fullscreen" or "Windowed" modes) triggers it sometimes, although I haven't been able to identify a pattern.

When the issue is triggered, windows will snap to an area limited to a narrow row on the top of the monitor,

One the issue occurs, it remains constant until the taskbar is moved back to the primary screen. Once the taskbar has been moved back to the primary screen, it can be moved back to a secondary monitor and the problem will not recur consistently.

  • Primary taskbar is set to left side (vertical) of secondary monitor.
  • Windows 11 Pro (26100.6899, although this has been occurring for several months now)
  • Taskbar: Windows 10 (ExplorerPatcher)
  • Start Menu: Windows 10
  • 3rd party software: Practically any game that has an Exclusive Fullscreen mode, but not consistently.
  • Once triggered, issue will persist until a reboot or until the taskbar is moved to the primary monitor. It is not necessary to move the taskbar to a horizontal (bottom or top) orientation to fix the issue; the taskbar can remain vertical so long as it is dragged to the primary monitor temporarily.

OK, I found a simple & reliable way to reproduce this: change the refresh rate of the main screen in Windows

In my setup:

  • 144Hz->60Hz or the other way round is working 100% of the time
  • Restarting Explorer (via ExplorerPatcher panel) fixes the issue (until next trigger)
