Constant Explorer Crashes

Open samschultzponsys opened this issue 10 months ago • 19 comments

I am experiencing constant explorer crash and reloads when trying to path around the file system this is occurring on two of my machines most notably. What can I provide to assist in troubleshooting?

samschultzponsys avatar Apr 02 '24 05:04 samschultzponsys

I have had this happen as well recently. When right clicking on files, selecting files or just navigating it randomly crashes.

This just started happening after my Windows 11 updated to 23H2. I suspect this might be some change in Windows code that makes Explorer Patcher crash.

Herrcookiekiller avatar Apr 02 '24 06:04 Herrcookiekiller

I have noticed it since the latest Windows update as well, glad to hear I'm not crazy or alone on this one.

Please state your Windows versions found on winver. Video demonstrations would also help.

I am running 23H2 22631.3296, I will try and capture an example

samschultzponsys avatar Apr 02 '24 18:04 samschultzponsys

It is not consistent enough for me to capture the issue.

samschultzponsys avatar Apr 03 '24 05:04 samschultzponsys

When it happens:

  1. Open up windows event viewer or computer management
  2. Go to Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs -> Application
  3. Check to see what the crash is and copy and paste it here

Today I somehow got into a state where explorer.exe was crashing every time I tried to open it. I'm also on Windows 11 version 23H2 22631.3296. I'm back to a working state now, but here is all the info I have that might be relevant.

I experimented with changing some ExplorerPatcher settings to see if crashes persisted. When I switched to Taskbar Style "Windows 10", I was able to launch explorer.exe successfully. After switching back to Taskbar Style "Windows 11 (default)", it went back to crashing. Next I tried switching off the File Explorer option "Disable the Windows 11 context menu". This also allowed me to launch explorer.exe. However, this time when I re-enabled the option (to remove the Win11 menus again), I am now able to launch explorer.exe with no crashes (even though this is back to my original configuration).

I installed ExplorerPatcher recently (~2024/03/31 04:43:00.00). Since installing, I did have a system crash that appeared to be caused by my GPU driver and had strange explorer.exe behavior until another manual restart. I also installed O&O ShutUp10++ in the past few days. No other new software or configuration changes.

Here is the complete set of ExplorerPatcher options I had (and have) enabled (the rest are disabled):

Taskbar

  • Taskbar style: Windows 11 (default)

System Tray

  • Skin taskbar and tray pop-up menus
  • Center tray icon pop-up menus
  • Flyout behavior for tray icon pop-up menus
  • Control Center button

File Explorer

  • Register as shell extension
  • Disable the Windows 11 context menu
  • Use immersive menus when displaying Windows 10 context menus
  • Disable modern search bar

Other

  • Open clock flyout when pressing Win+C instead of Microsoft Teams
  • Show separators between taskbar toolbars
  • Disable Win+F (Feedback Hub) hotkey

Advanced

  • Enable symbols download

If you don't have "disable rounded corners on application windows" enabled, a crash in dwmcorei.dll suggests that it's your GPU that is having problems, I think.

Amrsatrio avatar Apr 04 '24 03:04 Amrsatrio

So I am using the windows 10 style should I enable or disable the rounded corners.

It's better to have disable rounded corners off as it is the only feature where EP messes around with DWM. If your GPU is unstable overall it's better to use the 10 style taskbar.

Canary builds are not supported because the code is not final and can change with each new release.

Hi, any updates on this issue? I am not experiencing periodic crashes on 22621.34xx and 22621.34xx when navigating around in Explorer, so there is nothing I can do to fix your crashes.

Amrsatrio avatar Apr 27 '24 20:04 Amrsatrio

I think the issue seems to have gone away some what, I am seeing a new issue now where the start menu has reverted back to the windows 11 start menu I'm sure you are all aware of this already

Update to the latest pre-release to fix that. You installed a preview update from april 23rd.

In the settings app, untick "Get the latest updates as soon as available" so that preview updates are not automatically installed.

All preview updates are then shown as download and install and are never automatically installed if you have the above unticked.

Preview updates are also not fully tested by Microsoft and thus could have bugs.

You should only be installing preview updates if you are a developer or are OK with running pre-release versions of EP.

pyrates999 avatar Apr 27 '24 22:04 pyrates999

Pretty sure I'm running the standard releases but I'll take a look this evening thank you.

You are still offered preview updates with the standard release. But you don't need preview updates as none of them are security related.

pyrates999 avatar Apr 28 '24 11:04 pyrates999

I just chose to receive the preview releases as it was unchecked and it immediately updated and fixed my start menu.
