The option "customize notification area icons" doesn't save the changes

Open 007me opened this issue 1 year ago • 53 comments

Hi,

When I try to use this option it opens the settings window. I'm changing the settings for the different icons in the notification area, click OK but it doesn't work. When I open the settings again is goes back to the default value. explorerpatcher

I'm having the same issue. Taskbar style: Windows 10. When I change any of these dropdown values then there's no effect, e.g. Volume will not be hidden and Windows Explorer etc will not be shown. Not before nor after the OK button is clicked. And yes, the chosen values are also not being saved, i.e. they're back to default values. Additionally, it doesn't seem to make any difference whether the same icon is turned on or off in the Settings app.

However, the checkbox of "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" works just fine (and has an effect before any OK button is pressed).

Uninstall explorer patcher and restart. Then try to do these changes and see if they are still happening.

When explorer patcher is not installed the issue is not happening.

I'm using it on Windows 11 with "Taskbar style: Windows 10", so I can't use Windows 10 taskbar after I uninstall it to compare. Windows 11 taskbar works fine.

Thank you for confirming this is an issue with explorer patcher.

I started seeing the same issue after Windows 11 pro updated itself yesterday. In addition, the Start Menu cannot be switched to Windows 10 style after this update. I am running 22621.1555.55.1

I can confirm that this issue is happening on all of my systems as well.

I was able to use Windhawk mods to make the Windows 11 taskbar everything I wanted it to be, so I don't need to change the taskbar to Windows 10 with ExplorerPatcher (still using it for other things), therefore no more issues with notification area icons.

Please share what mods you use in WindHawk to make the windows 11 taskbar into what you wanted.

If @ardokirsipuu is anything like me, this is it: https://windhawk.net/mods/taskbar-labels

Yes, that one + https://windhawk.net/mods/taskbar-grouping to ungroup windows because that's how I've always preferred it in Windows 10 (1 click instead of 2 clicks to open a window of many).

There are many others as well that you can choose according to your needs, e.g. using https://windhawk.net/mods/taskbar-clock-customization to make the taskbar clock font size bigger.

I'm also experiencing this issue. After going through the link in the Explorer Patcher settings window, it takes me to a classic style notification behaviour menu. After selecting a few items to "Always show notifications and icons", I hit okay. However, the icons remain hidden, regardless of the behaviour selected. When I return to the notification behaviour menu, the options I selected have reverted (changes not saved).

The notification area for windows 11 might only work on the windows 11 taskbar, not the windows 10 taskbar in windows 11.

pyrates999 avatar May 25 '23 22:05 pyrates999

I've tried with both, no significant changes in behaviour.

I've always had it set to show all icons in the system tray.

Same problem, but I found it can be saved by click the "Restart File Explorer (*)" button manually.

are you using the windows 10 taskbar or windows 11 taskbar?

So, any updates on this? Any new version that may fix it?

yes doesn't tell me if you're using windows 10 or 11 taskbar.

pyrates999 avatar Jun 23 '23 09:06 pyrates999

Windows 10 taskbar of course

007me avatar Jun 23 '23 11:06 007me

Then wait for this to get fixed, if there is a fix available.

pyrates999 avatar Jun 23 '23 11:06 pyrates999

Same issue. 'show or hide system try icons' doesn't work. I want Windows 10 task bar style, but I want to also hide a couple of system tray icons. The only way I can get the icons to hide is by using 'windows 11 task bar' style.

Even with the new build from yesterday this issue wasn't solved 😥 The option was removed from the EP settings and the Windows 11 Settings doesn't seems to be functioning after installing the EP.

007me avatar Jul 27 '23 15:07 007me

If it was removed from explorer patcher, that means it was removed because it didn't work.

pyrates999 avatar Jul 27 '23 20:07 pyrates999

I wonder if it will be fixed cause this is a major stopper from using EP.

007me avatar Jul 28 '23 12:07 007me

Look in control panel for customizing the system tray icons.

pyrates999 avatar Jul 28 '23 16:07 pyrates999

As a work-around, I found that you can drag and drop the tray icons between the shown section on the taskbar and the hidden section within the pull up section.

Since the issue is not addressed in a serious way, I decided to uninstall EP. So long boys... thanks for all the fish.

But is there other solution that may work?
