Toggle editing simply by focus and remove edit button?

Unsure. Could easily confuse the user.

I tried to implement that feature but I don't think this will work.

There are no other widgets which can "steal" the focus from the note pad -- there are only the buttons of the timer. This means if you wanted the note pad to lose its focus, you'd have to click on one of the timer buttons. That's pretty cumbersome.

However, I've added a Vim-like feature in commit 1ca2ea7de89663922c3f844d33fa599b86edda9a : You can quit editing by pressing "Escape" and start editing by pressing "i".

I think this is a good compromise. At least until someone has a better idea to deal with that issue.
