Localize untranslated `.po` files

Contribute Translations for Untranslated .po Files Based on Your Native Language Knowledge

Description:
The project supports localized holiday names for over 150+ countries and regions. However, many countries still have untranslated holiday names in their respective .po files, especially for local markets. This task invites contributors to help translate these holidays based on their native language knowledge to improve the project's localization (l10n) coverage.

This is a high-impact task as it directly benefits users from different countries by ensuring they see holiday names in their native language.

Which Languages Need Help?

Here are a few languages that still have many untranslated holidays:

  • 🇸🇦 Arabic (ar.po)
  • 🇧🇷 Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR.po)
  • 🇨🇳 Chinese (zh_CN.po)
  • 🇩🇪 German (de.po)
  • 🇮🇳 Hindi (hi.po)
  • 🇮🇹 Italian (it.po)
  • 🇯🇵 Japanese (ja.po)
  • 🇫🇷 French (fr.po)
  • 🇪🇸 Spanish (es.po)

You can also browse all languages in the locales/ folder to see where your language knowledge could contribute.

Acceptance Criteria

  • All untranslated holidays in the .po file have been translated to the target native language.
  • Translations are accurate and appropriate for the region.
  • A pull request is submitted with clear information about the language and country you worked on.
  • Optional: If you find mistakes in existing translations, feel free to correct them in the same PR.

This is a placeholder issue, please create one related to localization you'd like to work on.

I wish to work on this issue.

@Nithin3003 For reference, you can check out example PRs like #2407, #2385, #2346, #2275, and #2268 - feel free to pick any country you'd like to work on! 😊

For new contributors, I’d recommend starting with countries that already have l10n support, as they’re easier to work on compared to something like UnitedStates, which doesn’t have l10n support yet.

Hi, I’ve gone through the project and I’m interested in contributing. I had a question regarding the translation files.

In hi/IN.po, all Indian holiday names wrapped in tr() seem to have both msgid and msgstr filled, while the default language correctly leaves msgstr empty. On my end, the make check tests are passing(which ensures that all .po files have 100% translations), so I’m not sure which holiday entries are being considered untranslated.

Could you clarify if there are specific entries that need attention, or if I am missing something here? Any guidance will help me address this properly.

Thank you.

Yes, India already has localization in Hindi (#2259). @Neha-Gaikwad1505, If you are interested and have a good knowledge of Hindi, you can try translating other countries holidays into it.

After thinking about it, I feel that a more meaningful contribution to the project would be to translate Nepal’s holidays into Nepali. This seems more relevant and genuinely helpful for Nepali users. Also, this feels more effective than translating other countries’ holidays into Hindi, since it directly adds value to a specific community.

I’d be happy to go ahead with this, and I’ll create a separate issue for “Translating Nepal Holidays into Nepali” so everything is organized properly.

Thank you for the guidance and I’m looking forward to contributing!
