Windows 11 24H2 VM hangs before login screen for UTM 4.7.4 (runs fine on 4.6.4)

I have a virtual machine with Windows 11 24H2 that works fine with UTM 4.6.4. After upgrading to UTM 4.7.4 I don't get to the login screen in WIndows, it hangs forever.

Configuration

  • UTM Version: 4.7.4
  • macOS Version: 15.7
  • Mac Chip (Intel, M1, ...): M3

Crash log
No crash, just hangs forever.

Where does it hang? Can you provide a screen shot?

It displays a disclaimer and an OK button, normally when clicking the "OK" button it would show the login screen, but not with UTM 4.7.4. I cannot attach a print screen as the disclaimer contains confidential information from the company the image is connected to (work / school account)

Is it possible to reproduce the issue with a new windows install? Otherwise I cannot figure out the issue.

I just ran my Win11 with UTM 4.6.4 again (I needed to do something in Windows), it installed updates. I thought maybe it's related to those updates, so after they were installed, I shut it down and tried to launch the VM with UTM 4.7.2, 4.7.3 and 4.7.4, but for all 3 versions it now doesn't even display the disclaimer (which it did yesterday) and I get a black screen and never see a login screen.

Can you see if a fresh windows 11 install has issues?

I'm having maybe the same issue, but it doesn't hang, the screen is just black. If I double-click, then enter my password and press return, the desktop will show. However dynamic screen size etc. doesn't work any longer.

Interesting update: I copied the VM onto my friends MacBook which is running MacOS Tahoe 26, because I was unsure whether it's a good idea to upgrade MacOS, and surprisingly, on MacOS Tahoe 26, my Win11 VM doesn't even run with UTM 4.6.5, I get the same behaviour as with 4.7.4 on MaOS 15.7, that means, a black screen never reaching the login screen.. So on MacOS 15.7, my VM runs fine with UTM4.6.5 whereas on MacOS Tahoe 26 it does not.

Weird. Did you use an x86-64 or ARM version ? I start Win11 24H2 x86-64 (slow emulation) on M1 Pro and it works flawlessly, albeit slow.

I avoid Windows ARM as the x86-64 emulation in Windows itself (the 'Microsoft Rosetta') is rather poor. With emulation on UTM, QEMU does it for you, much better.

I'm using the ARM version of Windows, worked very well before

I encountered a similar issue. Running macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 on M3 Pro chip, UTM version: 4.7.4. I downloaded the Windows 11 Professional ARM64 image from Microsoft's official website, but UTM throws an error immediately when starting this virtual machine: "Synchronous Exception at 0x000000013F529074"

I encountered a similar issue. Running macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 on M3 chip, UTM version: 4.7.4. When you start PLAY, it shows "start boot option" and then a black screen, after that there is nothing else you can do. Sometimes after rebooting it shows the attached screenshot.
