Same here. Fresh install of UTM 4.6.5, M2 Max on Sequoia 15.4.1. As soon as I installed the guest tools, the screen went black with the "Display output is not active" message. Tried unmounting all startup discs, changing the display adapter, multiple restarts, remounting the guest tools, etc.. Still blank screen. Mouse cursor shows up with some display adapters, but everything else is black after the bootloader & UTM logo.

What worked for me:

  • Switching to a non-GPU display adapter, like the one right above the default
  • Unmounting the Windows 11 startup disc and the guest tools or spice ISO
  • Restarting several times until the Windows Recovery Mode came on automatically, which does render
  • Use that to restart Windows into Safe Mode
  • In Safe Mode, remount and reinstall the guest tools
  • Shut down Windows (from within it)
  • Change graphics adapter back to the GPU one and reboot into Windows

@arcataroger , this works. thanks!!

maybe also, upon the initial installation of the tools, we just need to click "enter" to do the reboot ? even with a disabled adapter

For Win11 this always happens to me after installing the guest tools. I think that he video driver gets updated but never quite comes back on-line... For me the VM is running, just headless. Wait a good minute, then hit enter, tab, enter and It will reboot...

The installer is finished and asking if you want to reboot, so if it still has focus this will get you going. I'm not 100% sure the first enter is necessary, but I did it yesterday and it was good.

You can also downgrade to 4.6.4. This is a known issue until we push out updated drivers...
