Windows XP: no mouse or keyboard

Open m-schmitt opened this issue 7 months ago • 1 comments

I'm trying to port a Windows XP VM from VMware Fusion to UTM/QEMU, but the mouse and keyboard are not working.

Configuration

  • UTM Version: 4.6.5 (108)
  • macOS Version: Sonoma 14.7.5
  • Mac Chip (Intel, M1, ...): Apple M2 Pro

Details I am able to create a clean install of a new Windows XP machine, so UTM/QEMU does work on my MacBook Pro. My problem is with a VM that I'm porting from VMware Fusion to UTM. The UTM VM is based on the Windows XP version from the gallery, but with a SCSI drive added.

I uninstalled the VMware tools from this machine before converting the VMDK to qcow2. I am able to get it to boot. It recognizes the keyboard at the start of the boot.

But after it gets to the Windows GUI, past the "Loading your personal settings...", it requires user interaction at the Windows Product Activation. At this point, neither the mouse (captured) or the keyboard work. Same problem if I boot in Safe mode: when you get to where you need to interact, no keyboard or mouse.

Since I'm on the first boot, SPICE tools are not installed.

I tried connecting an actual external USB mouse to the MacBook Pro. When I selected it from the USB window, it attached it to the VM, but still same issue: no movement of the mouse in the VM.

Any suggestions on how to get past this issue?
