libGL falls back to software rendering

Symptoms:

  • Everthing feels sluggish, even typing into a text field in a browser.

  • compiz, browsers, and GUI programs in general consume a lot of CPU time.

  • With the intel graphics driver I see the following in ~/.xsession-errors:

    libGL error: failed to open drm device: Permission denied
libGL error: failed to load driver: i965

The problem is in the groups of the "ubuntu" user. Desktop users must be in the "video" group to open the DRI device. The ubuntu-desktop template should add the default user to the appropriate groups.
