Backlight state not maintained when switching VTs

To reproduce:

  1. Switch to host's X server (usually VT7, CTRL-ALT-F7) and adjust the display brightness.
  2. Switch to a container's X server on another VT and adjuste the display brightness.
  3. Switch back and forth and notice how the display brightness gets reset either to maximum or to the host's level -- I'm not quite sure now.

Seeing the following message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log in a desktop container. Might be related.

(EE) intel(0): failed to open /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness for backlight control: Permission denied
