groups: cannot open app links if protocol handler not enabled

Open basilesportif opened this issue 3 years ago • 5 comments

Describe the bug When I try to open webgraph links to apps in Brave, it tries to open them in a new tab, which results in an error.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Click on a link to an app
  2. get a message from browser that it doesn't know how to open this type of link

Expected behavior Give an option to install the application.

Operating context

  • Device: x86
  • OS: Ubuntu 21.04
  • Browser Brave: Version 1.31.87 Chromium: 95.0.4638.54

Have you enabled linking in settings? Screen Shot 2021-10-27 at 3 44 50 pm

Also I've noticed that Brave sometimes blocks the behavior the first time around with a "Pop-up Blocked" in the address bar that you have to enable.

@liam-fitzgerald that worked, and I'll close this. Is there any way to make this more intuitive or better documented? I know how to add package sources with treaty, but I assume that's not standard for "normal" users.

@arthyn any reason we can't just navigate to the url directly, instead of routing it through the protocol handler?

We just need to not open in a new tab when opening protocol links because they can be blocked as "popups". We may potentially want to look at just directly linking like Liam said in Groups.
