File upload field, make all file upload types the default, or possibility to change default

Open karlmacklin opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

By default when creating a file upload field you are met with: image

First off, this toggle is quite confusing. We thought it was turned "off", but in fact it is set to require the input of what file types you will allow.

At this point you can't even save the field: image

First when clicking the toggle it dawns how the toggle behaves: image

The main point is not the confusion from the labeling (although that would be nice to be handled better). The main point is that this is cumbersome for the default use cases for our clients.

It would make more sense to by default allow all file types! That way you can create the field faster as well and minimize the risk of getting stuck for the less tech savvy users.

Either change the default, or introduce a setting that can change the default for the field.

I'm not sure I completely agree with the recommendation here. I feel we should probably be pushing users towards defining the set of file types that they want to accept. I.e. it's better that they are encouraged to consider and only add the ones they need, and so not have a default of allowing the upload of anything.

We're doing a review of open issues at the moment, and will take this in as a feature request. We can look to add a configuration setting as suggest, that by default will keep the current behaviour, but if you do want to allow all fields by default, you could switch that behaviour on.
