TrackIR download link out of date
The link in the app to download trackir no longer exists. The current location for these files is:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/naturalpoint/trackir/software/TrackIR_5.4.2.exe
Thank you for spotting that! Will fix the links in the next release. Kind regards, Michal
Michal,
first let me say YOU ARE DA MAN!
I was able to get the tracker to work (just the test for now) today, using the delanclip (would be nice if we had this as a pre-set to select) and a ps3-eye cam on Linux Mint 18.1.
I have two questions:
-
I plan to use the tracker with Falcon BMS 4.33 running in WINE, but installing wine support fails because it seems the TIR firmware is no longer included with the various setup.exe files available over at NP. Any idea where I can get the firmware files? Will I need to use WINE mode in order to get the clip working within Falcon BMS?
-
Where can I send the money? I think I saw a donate link somewhere... ;-)
Again, fantastic work mate.
All the best, Uwe
Hello Uwe, as for the delanclip, it is the first time I've heard about it... Will take a look at that and add it to the models... I was trying Falcon AF under wine and it did work; will check to see what might be missing (last time I tried the firmware extraction worked well)... If you click the Wiki pane above, it will get you to the home page and there is the link (didn't managed to put the picture there yet)... Kind regards, Michal
Hello Michal,
thanks for the reply. I meanwhile managed to extract the firmware files using the linuxtrack-wine.exe you so kindly provided in one of the issue comments (the exe was missing from the archive I downloaded 93.19 I believe).
I also got tracking to work in Falcon BMS under wine, but it is extremely jittery even with all the smoothing sliders maxed out. I'm using a ps3 eyecam which linuxtrack picks up nicely (320x240 @ 187hz selected by default), and the video view and 3d view in the glider look smooth as silk, but within BMS it's pretty much unusable right now.
Looking at the detailed axis setup stuff, I've noted the red and blue crosses being quite "jiggly" as well, but that doesn't seem to affect the glider 3d view too much.
As a comparison I disabled the Acelera Mk2 filter in win7 in facetracknoir and I got a similar effect in BMS under windows, the tracking being extremely sensitive and jumpy (just a couple of pixels but really nauseating ;-))
Is there some kind of mailing list / forum where I could ask some questions? I really don't want to bother you with the fiddly bits so I was hoping there is a community out there which maybe I've been so far unable to track down ;-)
All the best & keep up the good work,
Uwe
PS: For the record, I think there's quite a large percentage of BMS users out there considering switching to wine / Linux, so I would really lilke to help them making the transition.

Hello Uwe, can you try lowering the camera frame rate? Try switching to 320x640 @ 60hz and see if the jittering gets better... I'll try to test it in the evening and see if I can reproduce the problem... Kind regards, Michal
Thanks Michal,
I already tried this yesterday and it did not appear to help. I also played with the pixel format to no avail.
Are you running BMS under WINE, too? If so, which version of wine are you running? I selected the standard v1.6 that comes with Linux Mint, but I could also give 2.1 a try as it's available from a repo, too.
If you need any further info please let me know. When I launch BMS, I see a dialog box about "Fake TrackIR already running".
I hope things work ok on your end because then there's hope something is b0rked on my end :-)
All the best, Uwe

Hello Uwe, I used to test it with the Falcon 4 Allied Force and it worked reasonably well (Wine 1.6 I think)... Just to be sure, when you open the 3D preview, it is not that jittery? One more thing that may help me reproducing the problem - could you package the logs (fourth pane, there is a button for that) and attach them here? Then I'll see exactly how did you set it up... Kind regards, Michal
Hello Michal,
will do so when I get home tonight. The 3d glider test view is silky smooth, no jitters at all as far as I can tell.
If you need a "test license" for BMS let me know and I'll buy one for you over at gog or steam (consider it another donation then, BMS really is leaps and bounds beyond Falcon AF). BMS requires a falcon 4.0 installation since version 4.33.
All the best, Uwe

Hello Uwe, I have Falcon 4 from GOG, will look for the BMS then... Kind regards, Michal
Hello Michal,
I've now gotten 640x480 @ 60hz to work, but it's still quite jumpy and hardly usable for a smooth experience.
Please find the logfile below. You may note that I had to crank up the blob size to 300-400 pixels in order for the camera to pick up the LEDs, but maybe I am misunderstanding something about the meaning of those values.
Also, the threshold has to be maxed out (ir filter removed from the ps3/eye) so the tracker picks up the LEDs. From what I can tell from the camera view / 3d view, everything should be quite smooth, weird that it isn't in BMS.
I also noted BMS fails to pick up the z axis movement (which I've mapped to POV control while enabling trackir vector and 3d track ir in Setup -> Advanced -> View control which is just how it works natively in windows with FaceTrackNoIR.
Please find attached a screenshot of the tracking window as it looks on my system, and please let me know if you need any other information.
All the best & thanks again very much for your help!
Uwe

Hello Uwe, before I get the thing downloaded, there are two things I noticed... First of all, the min-blob setting seem quite high and quite close to the max-blob; to make sure this is OK, open the Camera preview and try the full range of head movement and see if the white crosses do not disappear. If they do, adjust the appropriate setting (if the cross disappeared when the blob gets smaller, lower the min blob and vice versa)... But the second thing that doesn't seem to be right is the threshod - 253 is way too big... Try using something like guvcview to setup the picture in such a way that such a high threshold is not necessary (turn off the auto-exposition and other auto-thingies, set lower exposition time, play with brightness)... You can also consult the help in the ltr_gui - there is a section with a few troubleshooting tips. Kind regards, Michal
Unfortunately due to the lousy wifi connection I'll have to let the download run through the night, so I'll be able to try it tomorrow evening... Kind regards, Michal
Hello Michal,
thanks for the hint about tuning the camera... I'll give it a try tonight.
Good luck with the download, I hope you enjoy BMS!
All the best, Uwe

Hello Uwe, I just tried it and the tracking seems to be OK (similar to the way it works in the X-Plane, which is my "primary" sim)... Had to play a bit with the cam - some resolutions/framerates caused farbled frame about once or twice per second. I ended up using 640x480 @ 50Hz - also turned of all the autowhite ballance and autoexposure, tuned the exposure, brightness and gain to see only lights (using the guvcview) and from there I went to ltr_gui... Threshold set to 128 (approximate "middle" of the working range), blob min/max to 4/230 and cranked a bit the common smoothing to make it nice... Hope it helps, Michal PS. Will have to read the docs first, but the Falcon looks nice...
Hello Michal,
thanks for your suggestion looking at guvcview... after that I was getting relatively smooth tracking in BMS. It is still a bit jumpy around the middle, but I'll try the values you suggested and see if it gets any smoother. I'm also at "middle ground" w/r to the threshold, so that much is looking good. Can you explain what the "camera focal view" setting does? I have my ps3 eye zoomed in all the way as far as it will go.
I have big problems with getting the z axis to control Field of View within BMS though (works great in FaceTrackNoIR and is really handy for zooming in on instruments and objects in the 3d world). The zooming works "a bit", but not within a range to be useful within BMS.
I've attached two pics showing the "zoomed out" and "zoomed in" view (head all the way back / towards the monitor), and it seems like the tracker sends a weird range to BMS, but I need to check the values I see in FTNoIR and compare the two. Right now, the zooming in sort of "stops" after a certain distance towards the monitor.
You can set the z axis behaviour in BMS under setup -> advanced -> view control -> enable trackir vector and then select "FOV control".
I'm glad to hear you like BMS, it really is a fantastic sim and a stellar example of what can be done with any product if a vibrant and passionate community gets behind it.
I'm also planning on purchasing x-plane once v11 comes out end of this month, and this one will be native Linux for me from the start ;-)
All the best & thanks again for your help!
Uwe

Hello Uwe, there are few more things I noticed when going through your log... First of all, the DelanClip should be exactly the same as the NP TrackClipPro, so if you select that one instead, it should work just fine... Also the Head-X,Y and Z looks strange - that way you'd have to have it inside of your head, otherwise you'd get back and forth movement when looking left/right... Just try switching to the NP TrackClip Pro and see if it is any better... As for the jumpiness in the Falcon, make sure you select the right profile - from the log it seems that with the default profile you have way higher smoothing than in the Falcon profile... That might cause the jumpiness that you see in the Falcon but not in the ltr_gui, which uses Default profile; just switch to the Falcon 4 profile and see if the ltr_gui's 3D preview behaves like in the Falcon. If it does, just crank the common smoothing up and it should work just fine... Let me know how it goes, Michal
Hello Michal,
sorry for the late reply, I only got around to testing your suggestions just now, things have been quite busy at work this week.
I selected the trackclip pro and you're right, the view is much less "wiggly" than with my previous settings, but sadly the z axis still doesn't work over the whole range of the movement. The "Zoom" function looks still like in the screenshots I sent in my previous email.
About the clip being literally in my head... that would explain a lot ;-)
I've included the logfile as usual.
All the best & have a good weekend,

As for the jumpiness in the Falcon, make sure you select the right profile
- from the log it seems that with the default profile you have way higher smoothing than in the Falcon profile...

Hello Michal,
I've attached two screenshots from my FaceTrackNoIR setup that show the range of the Z axis with this setup (back and front)... should I try to enter these MAX values for the Z axis in linuxtrack or is this a completely separate setting?
All the best,
Uwe
Hello Uwe, unfortunately no screenshots made it through... As for the Z axis problem, the thing is this: Linuxtrack reports the angles in degrees, and distances in milimeters, while TrackIR just uses numbers from -16384 to 16384 for everything... The problem with distances is, that I have no idea what is the full range equivalent... At the moment there is a conversion coefficient, but it seems to be somewhat small... I'm going to see if I can come up with some idea based on games I own... For now, you can use higher limit for the Z-Axis (Tracking setup, set Falcon 4.0 profile, Detailed Axis Setup, Forth Limit), maybe somewhere around 1500 or higher... The movement in the 3D Preview is going to be much exagerated, but in the Falcon you should get somewhat better "zoom". Kind regards, Michal
Thanks Michal,
I'll try that.
I've uploaded the screenshots here (I'm using FaceTrackNoIR with the Pointtracker plugin):

Hello Uwe, I'm sorry it took me that long - we are in the middle of a house reconstruction... I'm attaching new linuxtrack-wine.exe - please uninstall the one you have already in the wine prefix you use for the Falcon and install this one instead... Also note that to get the full range of motions, you need to set the translations limits (be sure to select the appropriate profile) to 500 - then the ranges should be OK... Kind regards, Michal linuxtrack-wine.zip
Hello Michal,
thanks a lot for getting back, no worries about the "delay"... you're really doing a stellar support job ;-)
Thanks & all the best, Uwe

Hello Michal,
I just posted a new issue on github about linuxtrack (I'm running 0.99.x) where the z axis doesn't work in Falcon BMS running under wine.
On windows I'm using the z axis for FOV control to zoom in on the instruments by moving my head closer to the screen, but is seems this effect won't work when using the linuxtrack-wine plugin.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Have a good weekend & all the best,
Uwe
